50th Anniversary of the Oxford
& Cambridge First Overland Expedition – Kuala Lumpur
Reception
In late 1955, six Oxbridge undergraduates set
off on what is now known as the
Oxford & Cambridge First Overland Expedition,
one of the longest of all overland journeys half-way round the
world, from the English Channel to Singapore. In celebration
of this extraordinary journey, a golden anniversary celebration
drive will be embarked on Saturday March 4, 2006. The route
will retrace the last leg of the Expedition's journey from Kuala
Lumpur to Singapore.
In commemoration of this historic and significant event, which
covered six months, six days and 18,000 miles, the Oxford &
Cambridge Society of Malaysia is holding a reception at the
Bankers Club of Kuala Lumpur on Thursday 2nd March, where members
and their guests will be able to meet the 5 surviving members
of the original expedition and listen to them tell us about
what Nigel Blundell of The Sunday Express called "an epic
jungle journey" no-one had yet to complete, an amazing
adventure across sixteen countries in three continents, where
at times it seemed there were "just too many rivers and
too few roads".
